Jeanne Gore was the founder of National Shattering Silence Coalition (NSSC). She worked tirelessly in the years before and up to her untimely passing to reform the system. She is missed by everyone who worked collaboratively with her to stand up for people with serious brain disorders.

Central to Jeanne’s perspectives was the fact that the afflictions that ‘Psychiatry’ classifies as “mental illness” are truly brain disorders. Jeanne like myself despised the misleading and inappropriate term “mental illness”. She knew that what that term meant to people was causing them to commit devastating acts of harm in the form of laws, criminal adjudication, healthcare and public policies.
In my conversations with Jeanne she made it clear that she believed that there should be no such thing as a standalone profession known as “Psychiatry”. Advocates in this community are well acquainted with the historical development known as the Neurology-Psychiatry Split. The advent of the breakaway and establishment of “Psychiatry” led to the catastrophic consequences that we see today in the form of unimaginable suffering, homelessness, unjust conviction, punishment , premature death and state-sponsored execution. All of these injustices and tragedies are happening because with the exception of a relatively small segment of humanity, what “Psychiatry” refers to as “mental illness” are profoundly misunderstood.
Any human being with insight into what so-called psychotic disorders do to the human state of consciousness would never convict, let alone execute a person who was “psychotic” (neurologically detached from reality) when they committed even the most gruesome and horrific acts of harm to another human being. The natural world is not the fiction people believe in…it is a terrifying reality what can happen to the human brain’s semblance of mind and consciousness. Neither psychology, nor the misguided ideologies of psychosocial psychiatry, nor religion can explain neurobehavioral symptoms of these brain function disorders, yet these are the notions that inform the criminal adjudication system.
Jeanne was a fierce proponent for abolition of the misinformed and unscientific IMD Exclusion, a champion of AOT programs, and activists for re-education of the populace about serious brain disorders.
Jeanne established PAIMI reform as a point of unity within the NSSC membership ( PAIMI is a program guided by the US Department of Justice Civil Rights Division – in such way that it is acting as an agent of what our advocacy community refers to as “die-with-your-rights-on” militants in the disability rights community). The OCR has had a long-standing history of going after states on the basis of OLMSTEAD violations because they fundamentally lack understanding of this class of illness
